Polls disagree on top-rated leader as Sánchez remains voters’ favourite for PM
GESOP puts the Prime Minister ahead in the race to lead Spain, while a separate GAD3 survey gives Alberto Núñez Feijóo the highest overall rating. Both polls show widespread dissatisfaction with national politics.
Two recent surveys have produced different rankings of Spain’s political leaders, although both point to poor public perceptions of the country’s political climate.
A poll by the Gabinete de Estudios Sociales y Opinión Pública (GESOP) for Prensa Ibérica found Pedro Sánchez was the most popular choice for prime minister among the candidates put to respondents. A separate GAD3 survey rated People’s Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo highest overall, although he scored only four out of 10.
The surveys asked different questions, helping to explain the contrast. GESOP asked respondents whom they would prefer as prime minister and also invited them to rate the politicians. GAD3 focused on public assessments of several leaders and found that 82% of those surveyed considered the state of Spanish politics bad or very bad.
In the GESOP poll, Sánchez was named by 25.8% as the preferred prime minister, ahead of Feijóo on 19.2% and Vox leader Santiago Abascal on 13.9%. Irene Montero, Podemos’s proposed candidate, received 4.6%, while former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau was chosen by 3.1%. More than a quarter of respondents, 28.1%, selected none of the candidates.
Sánchez retained the lead from the previous GESOP survey in June, but support for his rivals rose more sharply. Feijóo gained 3.2 percentage points and Abascal 2.7, compared with a 0.6-point increase for Sánchez.
The same poll gave Sánchez the highest overall rating, at 3.7 out of 10. Feijóo scored 3.5, Colau 3.2, Montero 3.1 and Abascal three. None reached four.
GAD3’s ranking was different. Feijóo was the only politician to score four, putting him top of that survey but still below a pass mark. The poll also included Alvise Pérez, leader of Se Acabó La Fiesta, among the figures assessed.
Both surveys showed that voters were much more positive about politicians from their own party. In the GESOP poll, Abascal scored 7.5 among Vox voters, while Sánchez and Feijóo each received more than six from their respective supporters. PSOE and Sumar voters gave Sánchez 6.2 and 5.8, but PP and Vox voters rated him just 0.8. Feijóo scored 6.4 among PP voters and five among Vox voters, compared with 2.2 from PSOE voters and 1.4 from Sumar voters.
GAD3 recorded a similar divide: Feijóo received 6.6 from PP voters and 5.6 from Vox voters, while Sánchez scored six among PSOE voters. PSOE supporters rated Feijóo 2.5, a higher score than the 0.8 PP voters gave Sánchez.
Among Sumar voters in the GESOP survey, Colau and Montero were rated almost equally, at 5.7 and 5.6 respectively. GAD3 also found Colau scored 5.1 among Sumar voters. Montero received a failing overall rating in that poll.
