Blantyre Water Board (BWB) Chief Executive Officer Yeremia Chihana has been suspended with immediate effect, pending an inquiry into allegations of misconduct, in a dramatic shake-up at the top of the utility.
BWB’s Chihana banned from premises as misconduct inquiry launched
The suspension follows a resolution passed by the BWB Board on Thursday, 28 August 2026, according to a memorandum issued to all staff by the Acting Director of Human Resource and Administration.
The memo confirms Chihana has been suspended in line with clause 3(d) of his contract of employment — a provision typically invoked in cases involving serious allegations requiring formal investigation.
Under the terms of his suspension, Chihana has been barred from accessing any BWB premises, sites or offices, unless expressly invited in writing by the Board Chairperson or a designated representative.
He has further been prohibited from directly or indirectly contacting BWB clients, suppliers or staff members regarding the institution’s business, effectively cutting him off entirely from the organisation’s operations while the inquiry proceeds.
The suspension marks a significant development for the water utility, with the nature of the alleged misconduct yet to be publicly disclosed as the Board’s inquiry gets underway.
It remains to be seen how long the investigation will take, and what its findings will mean for Chihana’s future at the helm of the organisation.
