Opposition Leader Sajith Challenges the Speaker at the Start of Parliament Today! VIDEO I Sri Lanka Latest News
The Constitution states in its first chapter that the sovereignty of the people is exercised through the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament today that around 1.1 million cases in the judicial process, which is a part of the exercise of people’s sovereignty, have been delayed, and that this situation was revealed to the country in response to a question he had raised.
He said that, at a time when around 1.1 million cases are pending, he has called for the appointment of a Select Committee under the subject of people’s sovereignty to examine the efficiency and independence of the judicial process, how the judicial process should function, as well as proposals, ideas, transparency, responsibility and accountability.
The Opposition Leader said that he does not challenge the Speaker’s discretion regarding the appointment of this Select Committee. However, he said the Speaker has no right to prevent the exercise of the people’s sovereignty guaranteed under the Constitution.
He further said that since the Fundamental Rights chapter of the Constitution states that everyone must be treated equally, although the Speaker has the freedom to act according to his discretion, he has no right to act in a manner that violates the Constitution.
