Uganda Martyrs Lubaga FC coach Edward Ssozi has vowed to correct his team’s mistakes after a 2-1 defeat to Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Sunday in the FUFA Women’s Super League.
The loss was Uganda Martyrs’ first of the 2026/27 campaign, leaving them third on the table with six points from a possible nine. However, Ssozi chose to focus on the positives, particularly his players’ response after the break.
“A 2-1 loss away from home is a bit of a blow, but I will take the positives. The girls have tried to play the game,” Ssozi said.
Agnes Nabukenya opened the scoring for Kawempe in the 21st minute before doubling the lead six minutes before half-time.
Uganda Martyrs returned stronger after the break and pulled one back through substitute Moureen Kiiza, but they could not find an equaliser.
Ssozi admitted his side was slow to settle in the first half but was encouraged by the improvement after the interval.
“The main principles started to manifest in the second half, but we did not get an equaliser. We were pushing in the first half, but we were a bit reluctant,” he said.
The coach promised to work on the team’s weaknesses ahead of their next fixture.
“We conceded two goals. In the second half, we came back stronger and pushed for the equaliser, which did not come. We are going to rectify our mistakes and prepare for the next game,” he added.
Ssozi also welcomed Kiiza’s return to action but admitted the forward still needs time to regain full fitness.
“She is back and has got some minutes to play, although her fitness levels are not yet there. She played the first 20 minutes, but after that, she was exhausted. We are going to prepare her more for the upcoming games,” he said.
Midfielder Gloria Namugerwa also blamed avoidable defensive errors for the defeat, while admitting the team lacked sharpness in front of goal.
“I want to thank the entire team and the girls for the fight. In the first half, we conceded very avoidable goals. I am sure the coaches have seen where the problem came from, and in our next game, we shall organise ourselves better,” Namugerwa said.
She added that despite the team’s hard work and the coaches’ efforts to address its weaknesses, better finishing and defensive organisation remain priorities.
“The girls have worked so hard, and the coaches have corrected some areas, but we lack sharpness in finishing. The defence also needs to improve because those were very silly goals, if I may say, but that is the game,” she added.
Kawempe’s victory marked a return to winning ways after their draw with She Maroons on matchday two, before the international break.
Uganda Martyrs will look to bounce back when they host She Corporate on Sunday, October 26.
