Scholes Wants 2011/12 Medal If Man City Lose Title
Manchester United great Paul Scholes has said he would accept a 2011/12 Premier League winners’ medal if Manchester City are stripped of the title, putting him at odds with former teammate Wayne Rooney.
The Premier League announced last Tuesday that an independent commission had found City guilty of serious financial rule breaches across nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. City have appealed the decision and maintain their innocence.
The finding has sparked debate among ex-players over whether City’s titles and medals should be reassigned. Rooney, who played with Scholes at United, said he would not want the 2011/12 medal because United were not the true champions that season. United and City finished level on points, but City won the title on goal difference.
Scholes rejected that view. In an Instagram post, he said he kept hearing former teammates call for City’s trophies to be taken away while not wanting the medals themselves. He described himself as a “greedy bastard” and added that he wanted his medal.
No punishment for City has been finalized. After the international break, City are set to face Liverpool at Anfield, where they are expected to receive a hostile welcome.
