Nairobi City Thunder head coach Bradley Ibs says the team will not be carried away by its remarkable 90-game unbeaten run, insisting they must continue raising their standards and improving.
Thunder completed a third consecutive Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League title after sweeping KPA 3-0 in the finals, extending their unbeaten streak to 90 games.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Sporty Monday show, Ibs said the run was a product of hard work, discipline and commitment, but challenged the team to aim even higher.
“It is a good thing. Not many teams can afford that easily. It was hard work, discipline and commitment to the course, so we must strive to keep improving,” said Ibs.
The coach also credited Thunder’s participation in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) with helping the team raise its level and maintain its dominance in the domestic league.
Ibs says competing against some of Africa’s best teams has exposed Thunder to a higher level of competition, with the club now setting its sights on going all the way in the continental competition.
“The level of competition in the league is very high. Our participation in that tournament has really improved our team, and our aim is now to win it,” added Ibs.
Thunder’s latest title was secured against a KPA side that pushed them throughout the three-game final series. Despite the 3-0 sweep, KPA challenged Thunder in key stages of the series, forcing the champions to dig deep.
Ibs believes such competition is important in building the team’s mental strength and maintaining the mentality that has driven their recent success.
He also attributed the club’s three consecutive league titles to discipline, teamwork and a collective commitment from everyone involved.
“Winning the title three times in a row is a very good thing. It’s down to our mentality, discipline and teamwork among every stakeholder. I hope that continues for many years,” said Ibs.
With domestic dominance firmly established, Thunder now face the bigger challenge of translating their success in Kenya into continental silverware.
