Kano State Government has appealed to the Federal Government for additional diphtheria vaccines to enable it embark on a mass vaccination campaign across the state.
The request followed the outbreak of the disease in some LGAs in the state with reported death of more than 50 children in Rano and other LGAs.
Director-General, Kano State Centre for Disease Control, KNCDC, Muhammad Abbas, who briefed the media on Tuesday night, confirmed that they had written to the Federal Government to get more vaccines .
Abbas expressed concern that many of these cases were uneported to the various healthcare facilities in the state
“The state has 126 disease surveillance and notification officers deployed across all 44 LGAs. It is disheartening that we have up to 50 deaths that were not reported to hospital,” he added
“Early presentation to healthcare facilities is what saves lives. Please go to the healthcare facility nearest to you. If the cases are epidemic-prone, they will alert us.” he said
“Come to the clinics, come to the hospital. If the hospitals feel these cases are beyond what they can handle, they will refer them to us and we will do the needful.” he urged
The KNCDC boss said the centre has been responding to diphtheria since Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration came into office.
From 2022 to date, Kano has recorded over 38,000 suspected cases, with more than 31,000 confirmed. End.
