Bail prayers unanswered for suspected church thieves
Two men accused of breaking into and stealing from a church saw their prayers for freedom go unanswered once again this week, as Molepolole Magistrates Court saw fit to keep them locked up on remand.
Viewed as a flight risk due to their lack of documentation, Zimbabwean duo Bomba Makumbe, 34, and Monga Moyo, 33, have been languishing behind bars since their arrest in September last year.
The duo, who insist they didn’t do it, stand accused of raiding Pillar of Life Ministry Church in Ditshegwane village, allegedly sneaking into the church between 14 and 15 August, 2025 (exact date unknown).
Once inside, they are said to have helped themselves to two hybrid speakers, two speaker monitors, a snack cable, and 46 plastic chairs, amounting to P35,220 in total.
They were caught weeks later, reportedly nabbed by the tipped-off boys in blue while attempting to sell some of the stolen properties.
Afterwards, it is reported some of the goods were found at the suspects’ homes.
The two homeboys were also charged with entering Botswana through an ungazetted point at Ramokgwebana village in August 2024, a crime they confessed to. Despite the guilty plea, over a year later and the duo are still to be sentenced for this charge!
Unimpressed with the lack of police progress in the case, Principal Magistrate Solomon Setshedi warned the cops to ‘get serious.’
“The accused are human beings; the fact that they are foreigners does not give the police a license to keep applying for the accused remand to keep them in jail. The substantive prosecutor should give the accused a fair trial and decide if she is proceeding with the matter,” Setshedi scolded.
However, in yet another delay, it was revealed the substantive prosecutor is currently on leave.
The matter was scheduled for mention on 13 October, with Makumbe and Moyo to remain incarcerated until then.
