Ondo Threatens Arrest, Prosecution Of Traffic Law Violators

Ondo State government has threatened to arrest and prosecute violators of its traffic laws, saying it is strengthening enforcement in Akure.

The special adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Transportation, Muyiwa Ogunyemi, who disclosed this yesterday to journalists in Akure, the state capital, said the state government intends to tackle illegal use of bus stops, roadside trading and other activities obstructing the free flow of traffic in the state capital.

Ogunyemi said the government had observed that some residents had taken over designated bus stops for commercial activities, while portions of roads had also been converted into workshops, warning that such practices would no longer be tolerated.

He said, “We want a situation whereby other road users will not create trouble for fellow users of the roads. We want to ensure that we do more on enforcement, having already commenced sensitisation and enlightenment for road users.”

The Special Adviser also announced restrictions on the movement of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okadas, around the Government House area in Alagbaka.‎

‎He further warned that motorists, Okada riders and tricycle operators who violate traffic lights would be arrested and prosecuted.

‎Ogunyemi also cautioned motorists against blocking vehicles at points where turning on red is permitted, saying road users must respect traffic regulations and other road users.

‎On road safety, he said zebra crossings and speed-limit signs would be installed, particularly around schools and other areas with heavy vehicular traffic.

‎He urged residents to cooperate with the government and obey traffic signs and regulations, saying proper use of roads was necessary to ensure free movement as infrastructure projects continue across Akure.
