Rights body launches study on violence against women, children

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (THBUB) has launched research in Arusha and Dar es Salaam regions to establish the extent of violence against women and children and identify measures to strengthen their protection.

Speaking at the Arusha Regional Administrative Secretary’s Office this week, the Commission’s Acting Assistant Director for Research and Documentation, Mr Paul Sulle, said the study aims to strengthen human rights protection in the country.

He said the research will establish the prevalence, causes and forms of violence, identify perpetrators and assess the effects on victims to inform appropriate interventions.

Mr Sulle said the findings will help the commission understand the situation in the two regions, identify existing challenges and recommend measures to prevent and respond to violence against women and children.

Alongside the research, the commission plans to establish human rights clubs in primary and secondary schools to raise students’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities.

Mr Sulle said the clubs will provide students with opportunities to learn how to identify human rights violations and report cases affecting them.

Speaking on behalf of Arusha Regional Administrative Secretary Dr Toba Nguvila, the Assistant Regional Administrative Secretary for Education and Vocational Training, Mr Vincent Kayombo, said the regional administration is ready to cooperate with the commission in implementing the study.

He said the findings are expected to contribute significantly to efforts to combat violence against women and children in the region.

Arusha Regional Social Welfare Officer Mr Denice Mgiye said the region recorded 3,400 cases of violence during the 2025/26 financial year, underscoring the need for continued interventions to protect victims.

He said Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital has a One-Stop Centre that provides free services to victims of gender-based violence, including assistance with preserving records and evidence.

Mr Mgiye added that the government has started plans to construct another centre in Karatu District to improve access to services for victims from Karatu, Monduli and Ngorongoro districts.

The proposed facility is expected to bring support services closer to affected communities and improve access to assistance for survivors.

Through the study and establishment of school-based human rights clubs, the Commission aims to strengthen public awareness, promote evidence-based responses to violence and uphold human rights and human dignity.
