From George Onyejiuwa, Owerri
As part of activities to mark the Golden Jubilee celebration of Owerri Club, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, will be installed as the President of the state’s premier recreation club.
The club will also honour ex-governors of the state, Chief Achike Udenwa and Dr Ikedi Ohakim, with Lifetime Benefactor awards, respectively.
Also, Senators Samuel Anyanwu (SamDaddy) and Onyewuchi Ezenwa will receive the Lifetime Benefactor awards, while the late elder statesman, Dr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, will be honoured with a posthumous Benefactor Legacy award.
The Chairman of the club, Ezinnwa Onyebuchi Obinna, who made the disclosure at a press conference yesterday, said that the personalities to be honoured are those who have contributed to the growth of the club in the past 50 years.
He said as part of our 50 years golden celebration, “Governor Uzodimma will be installed as the president of the club as stipulated by our Constitution”. He added that the club will also install the Chairman, Zinox Group, Dr Leo Stan Ekeh, who has been chosen as the keynote speaker, as the Grand Patron at the grand finale, scheduled for November 29, 2026.
He added, “The highlight of our 50 years anniversary is the establishment of the Owerri Club Hall of Fame, where the portraits of our heroes will be permanently enshrined. The management has approved 31 distinguished awards in five categories, including posthumous, past chairmen, past trustees, living legends and benefactors.”
The Owerri Club, which is the oldest recreation club in the state, was founded on June 14, 1976, by 14 civil servants who had returned from Enugu and other parts of Nigeria following the creation of Imo State. The ClubHouse at the Aladimma Estate was officially opened on September 11, 1978, by His Excellency, Brigadier Sunday Adenihun, then military governor of Imo State.
