CBN Urges Kano Traders to Handle Naira Notes with Care

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has called on traders and residents in Kano State to treat naira notes with respect, warning that careless handling increases the cost of replacing dirty and damaged currency.

The appeal was made during a sensitisation campaign at major markets across the state. Speaking at Galadima Market, Ibrahim Yahya of the CBN Currency and Operations Department said the naira represents Nigeria’s sovereignty and national pride, stressing that proper handling helps extend the lifespan of notes and saves the government money.

“By handling naira carefully, we are extending its lifespan and saving a lot of money in terms of replacement,” Yahya explained.

He noted that markets were chosen as the starting point because of their central role in cash transactions, particularly in Kano, a major commercial hub.

Traders, he said, handle large volumes of cash daily, making them key partners in preserving the quality of the currency.

The campaign will also cover Sabon Gari Market, Abattoir, Yankaba Market, Tarauni Market, Yan Lemo, and Dawanau International Grains Market.

Yahya urged traders and residents to handle the naira with “pride” and “dignity,” adding that protecting the quality of Nigeria’s currency is a shared responsibility.
