Bayelsa CP Pledges Fear-Free Policing, Seeks Stronger Media Partnership

The Bayelsa State new Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has assured that he will create an enabling environment for everyone to perform their lawful duties in the state without fear or favour.

This was as he called for a stronger collaboration between the Police Command and journalists in the state to combat crime and insecurity.

Adewale made the call on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, and other union leaders at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre in Yenagoa.

The Commissioner described the NUJ and the media as critical partners in maintaining public safety, stressing that security was a shared responsibility.

“Under my watch, the Nigerian Police will create the enabling environment for everyone to perform their lawful duties without fear or intimidation,” he assured.

He also announced an open-door policy for the command, saying journalists would have 24-hour access to report incidents and draw the attention of the police to developments in the society.

On discipline and drug abuse within the force, Adewale described discipline as the foundation of the Nigeria Police Force and warned officers against indiscipline and violations of operational guidelines.

He further pledged sustained collaboration with sister security agencies, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the State Ministry of Health and other relevant stakeholders to tackle crime and drug abuse.

The CP also assured residents of adequate policing across the state.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, Yemoleigha, welcomed the new Commissioner to Bayelsa and assured him of the media’s readiness to work with the police in promoting peace, security and development.

Yemoleigha expressed optimism that the leadership of the union would maintain a cordial and sustained relationship with the Police Command.

Also speaking, the NUJ Zonal Secretary, Comrade John Angese, commended the Commissioner for the visit and prayed for his elevation after a successful tour of duty in the state.
