Falolalism: Toyin Falola at the centre of scholarship, society and selflessness

By Ganiu Bamgbose

There are scholars who spend their lives studying society, those who interpret society for the benefit of others, and those who make scholarship an instrument for transforming society. The last category is relatively rare because it requires an intellectual disposition that transcends the pursuit of personal advancement. It demands a willingness to share knowledge, open doors, nurture younger minds, interrogate injustice and insist that scholarship must remain accountable to the society from which it emerges. It is within this tradition that the phenomenon of Falolalism, inspired by the life and intellectual practice of Professor Toyin Falola, becomes worthy of critical reflection.

Falolalism, as conceptualised here, is more than an affectionate reference to an accomplished historian. It represents an intellectual philosophy in which scholarship, social consciousness, mentorship and selflessness converge. It speaks to a model of academic life in which knowledge is not accumulated merely for personal prestige but circulated as a public resource, deployed as an instrument of cultural affirmation and sustained as a means of empowering others.

Professor Toyin Falola’s journey offers a compelling illustration of this philosophy. An internationally renowned historian of Africa, Falola has distinguished himself through an extraordinary body of scholarship on African history, identity, culture, politics and intellectual traditions. His academic accomplishments have earned him global recognition, but the significance of his work extends beyond the number of books published, the honours received or the institutions with which he has been associated. More importantly, his career demonstrates the possibilities of making African experiences central to the production of global knowledge.

For too long, African intellectual traditions have struggled against systems of knowledge production that privilege foreign theoretical frameworks and external validation. Falola’s scholarship challenges this imbalance by insisting that Africa is not merely an object to be studied but also a site of knowledge production, theoretical innovation and intellectual authority. His work exemplifies the conviction that African history must be examined in its complexity, with due regard for the agency, creativity and struggles of African peoples. In this sense, his scholarship is itself a form of activism: a sustained intervention against intellectual marginalisation.

Yet, the most instructive dimension of Falola’s intellectual life may lie in the relationship between achievement and generosity. The ideal scholar does not measure success exclusively by how far ahead they have travelled but also by how many others they have helped to move forward. Through mentorship, academic conversations, conferences, collaborative engagements and the creation of intellectual spaces, Falola has become a significant presence in the professional journeys of scholars across generations and geographical boundaries. His example reinforces an important principle: intellectual greatness becomes more meaningful when it produces opportunities for others.

This is particularly important in academic environments where senior scholars sometimes guard access to knowledge, networks and professional opportunities as though these were private possessions. Such a disposition transforms scholarship into a competition for recognition rather than a collective enterprise in the service of humanity. Falolalism offers a counter-model. It encourages established academics to become bridges rather than barriers, to see emerging scholars as intellectual partners rather than competitors, and to understand mentorship as a responsibility that accompanies achievement.

In what can be described as the guts to dare, I had invited Professor Toyin Falola to deliver a virtual lecture for GAB English Language Lab (an intellectual platform I created) even when I had never encountered him and the scholar-cum-historian extraordinaire obliged me. Such gesture which has put me in perpetual awe of his humility and selflessness is a testament to Professor Toyin Falola’s conception of scholarship as a tool for social transformation and the advancement of the human race.

The social dimension of this philosophy is equally significant. Scholarship cannot remain indifferent to the conditions of the people whose histories, languages, cultures and institutions it examines. An intellectual who studies inequality without questioning its structures, documents marginalisation without challenging its normalisation, or celebrates African culture without defending its dignity risks reducing scholarship to an exercise in professional convenience. Falola’s public intellectual engagements demonstrate the importance of connecting historical inquiry with contemporary questions about governance, identity, development, education and the future of African societies. His example invites scholars to move beyond the safety of the lecture room and participate meaningfully in public conversations.

This is not to suggest that every scholar must become a political activist or that academic rigour should be sacrificed for public visibility. Rather, it is to recognise that intellectual activism can take several forms: correcting historical distortions, challenging oppressive narratives, widening access to knowledge, defending intellectual freedom and helping societies understand themselves more critically. Falolalism therefore embodies activism through scholarship as much as activism through public engagement.

There is, however, a further lesson in Falola’s journey: the importance of intellectual abundance. A scholar who continues to write, speak, engage and encourage others demonstrates that knowledge is not diminished by being shared. On the contrary, intellectual generosity expands the reach of scholarship and strengthens the communities that sustain it. The true legacy of an academic is consequently not confined to what remains on library shelves but also includes the minds awakened, the careers encouraged, the conversations initiated and the possibilities made available to future generations.

Ultimately, Falolalism provides a useful framework for rethinking what it means to live an ideal scholarly life. It calls for productivity without intellectual arrogance, recognition without exclusivity, activism without the abandonment of rigour, and achievement without selfishness. It challenges Nigerian and African academics to reconsider the purpose of their intellectual labour in societies that urgently need critical thinking, historical consciousness and transformative leadership.

**Prof Falola **

Toyin Falola’s journey reminds us that scholarship reaches its highest expression when the pursuit of knowledge becomes inseparable from the responsibility to humanity. His example invites us to imagine an academy in which intellectual success is not merely a personal destination but a platform for collective advancement.

Perhaps, then, the enduring significance of Falolalism lies in this simple but demanding proposition: the greatness of a scholar is measured not only by what the scholar knows, writes or becomes, but also by what others are empowered to know, write and become because that scholar exists. That is the promise of an ideal scholarly life, and that is the challenge Falolalism places before us.

Long live Toyin Falola!

Long live Nigeria!

Long love Africa!
