Matsapha set for formal addressing system within 8 weeks
MATSAPHA – Matsapha is set to have its street addressing system rolled out within the next eight weeks, as the town becomes one of the first areas in Eswatini to implement the National Postcode and Addressing Project.
The project will enable every property in Eswatini to have a unique formal address linked to Google Maps, making it easier for residents, businesses, emergency services and government agencies to identify and locate properties.
This was revealed when the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) presented the National Postcode and Addressing Project to stakeholders in Matsapha.
The stakeholder engagement was hosted by Matsapha Municipality to update stakeholders on the rollout of the town’s street addressing initiative.
The engagement was attended by the acting Mayor, ward councillors, the municipality’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and management, representatives of emergency services and law enforcement agencies, as well as businesspeople with an interest in deliveries.
Presenting on behalf of ESCCOM was Postal Services Manager Vuyelwa Mashwama, who provided an overview of the importance of establishing a formal addressing system in the country.
Mashwama said the project was being undertaken in line with the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) initiative, “Addressing the World – An Address for Everyone”.
Eswatini, with the support of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT), initiated the project in 2020.
Mashwama highlighted several benefits expected to come with having formal addresses, including making it easier to locate properties during emergencies and improving the delivery of utility and government services.
The addressing system is also expected to benefit businesses and the courier industry by making it easier to locate customers and deliver goods.
For ESCCOM, as the regulator for postal and courier services, the project is expected to ease business operations and facilitate e-commerce in the country.
