AI summary
MITCHELLS Plain residents have until Friday, 25 September to nominate community members for the 2026 Mitchell's Plain United Residents Association (MURA) Community Service Awards.
Categories include arts and culture, business, civic, education, health, media, older persons, religious, safety and security, sport, welfare and youth.
The second annual awards will take place on Friday, 30 October at West End Primary School in Lentegeur, against the backdrop of Mitchells Plain’s 50th anniversary and MURA’s 10th anniversary.
Norman Jantjes, deputy chairperson of MURA, said: “The awards are two years old. We're also celebrating MURA’s 10th anniversary and, within the context of Mitchells Plain turning 50, it is perfect timing.”
“We want to promote positive role models, tell the positive stories and reward volunteerism.”
Jantjes said MURA was established in 2016 and formally launched on 6 May, 2017, to unite residents and work towards an improved quality of life.
The organisation has 18 member organisations, 13 individual members and representation on four ward committees, as well as the Mitchells Plain and Lentegeur Community Police Forums.
Its focus areas include road and community safety, economic development, education, health, older persons and sport.
“Currently, one of our primary focus areas is gang violence and the development of a local gang prevention and intervention strategy,” Jantjes said.
Nominations opened on Monday, 17 August and close on Friday, 25 September. No late nominations will be considered.
Nomination forms can be obtained from or returned to Michael Jacobs, chairperson of MURA, at [email protected] or Jantjes at [email protected]. Forms can also be collected at C de Cerff Attorneys, 1 Koffiepeer Close, Eastridge.
