Why billionaire chivayo and her wife will be buried without their Heads

The final farewell of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, is set to take an unusually painful turn, with the couple expected to be buried without their heads after forensic teams failed to recover them from the site of the helicopter crash.

Chivayo and Lucy were among the victims of the September 30 helicopter accident at Kudenga Farm in the Marondera area of Zimbabwe. The crash claimed the lives of everyone aboard, including pilots Captain Calvin Tafirei Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa, as well as security aide Sanelisiwe Magagula.

According to Chivayo’s uncle and family spokesperson, Herbert Chivayo, the crash was so devastating that the victims’ bodies were severely damaged. The helicopter caught fire after the impact, with reports indicating that aviation fuel contributed to the intensity of the blaze.

Herbert explained that the bodies were exposed to extreme heat and were subsequently left in a condition that made identification extremely difficult.

“The bodies were burnt until the fire died on its own,” Herbert said, explaining that the remains were beyond recognition.

The situation became even more distressing after forensic experts examined recovered remains that had initially been suspected to include parts of the victims’ heads.

However, further examination reportedly established that those remains were not heads.

Herbert subsequently dismissed claims circulating on social media that the missing heads had been recovered.

He confirmed that no heads had been found among the remains collected from the crash site.

The explanation has also shed light on why mourners will not be allowed to view Chivayo and Lucy’s bodies before burial. The family previously announced that there would be no traditional body viewing because of the extent of the damage caused by the crash and fire.

DNA testing was also undertaken to formally identify the victims, highlighting the severity of the destruction at the crash site. Zimbabwean authorities and forensic teams have been working to match recovered remains with the respective victims.

Despite the condition of the remains, the Chivayo and Muteke families have decided to proceed with the burial. The couple are expected to be laid to rest side by side at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

The heartbreaking circumstances mean the family will have to say goodbye without being able to see the couple’s bodies for the final time.

For many mourners, the tragedy is difficult to comprehend. Chivayo was a prominent Zimbabwean businessman known for his lavish lifestyle, philanthropy and high-profile public presence, while Lucy was remembered by those close to her as a loving wife and companion.

Their deaths have generated widespread grief across Zimbabwe, with tributes continuing to pour in from relatives, friends, business associates, religious figures and members of the public.

The decision to bury them despite some remains not being recovered reflects the painful reality faced by families after catastrophic accidents: sometimes, the final farewell must take place even when investigators are unable to recover every part of a loved one’s body.

As preparations continue for the couple’s joint funeral, attention is now turning to Glen Forest Cemetery, where Chivayo and Lucy will be laid to rest together—bringing to an end a tragic chapter that began with the devastating helicopter crash in Marondera.
