Ten things to know about late actor Olu Jacobs

Veteran actor Oludotun Baiyewunmi Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has passed on at the age of 84.

He died on September 16, 2026.

His wife, Joke Silva, and son, Olusoji, jointly announced the sad news in a statement on Wednesday.

Here are 10 things to know about him:

1. He was 84. Born July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs died September 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Nigerian theatre, TV, and film for over 50 years.

2. He earned the moniker ‘Lion of Lufodo’ from Lufodo Group, the media and production company he co-founded with his wife, Joke Silva.

3. He began acting on stage in the 1960s, worked in British television in the 70s and 80s, and returned to help build Nollywood in the 1990s.

4. Jacobs trained at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, RADA, in London. He appeared in UK series like The Professionals, The Bill and Dempsey and Makepeace before returning home.

5. He has over 200 films to his name, and defined authority on screen. Classics include Vigilante, Blood Diamond, Omeruah’s Advice, The Dogs of War, Dry, and Rattlesnake.

6. He married Joke Silva in 1989. Together they founded Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, mentoring thousands of actors.

7. He was instantly recognisable for his deep baritone and regal presence.

8. In 2007, he was conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR, for his contributions to Nigerian arts and culture.

9. Beyond acting, he fought for better welfare, structure, and IP protection in Nollywood. Lufodo Academy became a training ground for the next generation.

10. He is survived by his wife Joke Silva, children and grandchildren. The family has asked the public and media to “respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
