“It’s Our MONEY, Even If We Want To Spend It On BBL”: MALEMA Defends EFF’S

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President Julius Malema has sparked political debate following his unapologetic defence of the party’s spending on artists and entertainment, insisting that the organisation has every right to decide how it uses its own money.

Responding to criticism over the millions reportedly spent on artists and entertainment, Malema made it clear that he was not prepared to apologise for the party’s financial decisions.

“I heard someone saying we are spending money millions on artists and millions on what what. It’s our millions. Even if we want to spend our millions on BBL, we’ll do it. What’s the problem? It’s our money,” Malema said.

His remarks have attracted attention because they touch on a broader debate about political party spending, campaign priorities and the role of entertainment in attracting voters.

For the EFF, music festivals and entertainment have become an important part of political mobilisation. The party has frequently incorporated music, performances and large gatherings into its political activities, using popular culture to attract supporters and communicate its message beyond traditional political rallies.

Malema’s response suggests that the party sees no reason to be dictated to by critics when it comes to its spending choices. His argument is essentially that an organisation should have the freedom to allocate its resources according to its own priorities, provided the money belongs to it.

However, critics may argue that political parties must remain accountable for how they spend their resources, particularly when they are competing for public support and presenting themselves as alternatives to the existing political establishment.

The controversy also raises questions about whether expensive entertainment programmes translate into meaningful electoral support. While music festivals can attract large crowds and generate excitement, attendance at political events does not necessarily guarantee votes at the ballot box.

Nevertheless, Malema appears determined to defend the EFF’s approach rather than allow criticism of its entertainment budget to become a political liability.

His BBL comparison has also given the debate an unusual twist, turning what could have been a conventional discussion about campaign expenditure into another headline-grabbing political moment.

Ultimately, the bigger question is whether the EFF’s spending strategy delivers the political results the party expects. For Malema, however, the message is straightforward: the party will decide how to spend its money, regardless of what its critics think.
