Pastor Timothy Bentum has recounted how he overcame a 17-year struggle with drug use, claiming he did not experience any withdrawal symptoms when he finally quit.
The pastor said his experience was unusual, particularly because previous attempts to stop using drugs had failed and left him battling severe withdrawal symptoms, including fever.
Speaking during an interview on Joy Prime, Pastor Bentum said he had consulted several mental health experts and psychoanalysts, many of whom told him that going through 17 years of drug use and quitting without withdrawal symptoms was highly unlikely.
He explained that on previous occasions when he attempted to quit, the resulting physical discomfort often drove him back to drug use.
“I usually get very feverish, and so I’ll go back to my fix. But this time, I believe in prayer,” he recounted.
According to him, his eventual decision to quit came after he acknowledged that he could no longer overcome the addiction on his own and needed divine intervention.
Pastor Bentum, who disclosed that both his parents were pastors, said his religious upbringing influenced his decision to turn to God for help.
He recalled praying for divine assistance when he felt he could no longer continue with his drug use, describing his eventual recovery as a remarkable experience.
He also encouraged people struggling with drug addiction not to give up on efforts to quit, stressing the importance of seeking help and having someone who can hold them accountable throughout the recovery process.
“Don’t say you can’t do it. When it comes to drugs, say, ‘I can’t do it, help me,'” he advised.
He added that overcoming addiction could be a difficult process and urged people battling substance use to find accountability partners who could support them, while also seeking God’s help.
Pastor Bentum maintained that his experience of quitting without withdrawal symptoms was exceptional, cautioning against assuming that others would necessarily have the same experience.
