Morocco has extradited two Swedish men suspected of leading large-scale drug trafficking operations, in the first publicly announced results of a police cooperation agreement signed by the two countries this year.
The men are suspected of having a significant influence on Sweden’s illegal drug trade and will be placed before courts that will consider prosecutors’ requests to detain them pending trial, Swedish police said Friday.
One suspect, aged 28, is alleged to have led a wholesale distribution network supplying drugs to prominent criminal groups in Sweden and other Nordic countries. Swedish authorities linked the investigation to seizures made in Uppsala, Stockholm and Malmö in spring 2025, including 94 kilograms of 3-CMC, commonly known as crystal, and 56 kilograms of amphetamine.
In addition to an exceptionally serious drug offense, the 28-year-old is suspected of attempted aggravated extortion. Moroccan authorities arrested him near Tangier on March 30 after an Interpol Red Notice was issued.
The second man, aged 42, allegedly held a senior position in a criminal network and helped organize the smuggling of large quantities of cannabis into Sweden between 2020 and 2021. Several alleged accomplices have already been convicted in Sweden.
Swedish police said the extraditions followed an agreement signed in April by Sweden’s National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh and Abdellatif Hammouchi, Morocco’s director general of national security and territorial surveillance.
The agreement prioritizes action against suspects operating from Morocco, cooperation between criminal networks in the two countries and transnational organized and digital crime.
Two other Swedish nationals were recently arrested in Morocco in separate cases. One is wanted over suspected serious drug and weapons offenses, while the other allegedly fled before serving a prison sentence for aggravated abuse of a partner and serious unlawful threats.
Jonas Hemmar, deputy head of the Swedish police international unit, praised what he described as professional and constructive cooperation with Moroccan police.
