No ID, no warrant: Manhyia South MP explains why he drove away from alleged EOCO arrest attempt

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, says he was forced to drive away from the High Court premises on Wednesday after an individual identifying herself as an official of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) allegedly attempted to take him away.

According to the MP, the woman could not provide identification or an arrest warrant to establish her authority, prompting him to fear for his safety.

“I told her, ‘Go, I will follow you,’ but she said she would forcibly take me into their vehicle. At that point, she could not produce any evidence that she was indeed from EOCO,” he said.

He said he also asked whether she had an arrest warrant but she was unable to produce one.

“It became obvious to me that it was one of the recent kidnappings that have been happening. It is true. I had to defend and protect myself for the benefit of the good people of Manhyia South, my children, and my whole family,” he added.

Mr Baffour Awuah said he subsequently drove to Parliament, where he sought safety and joined his colleagues while also attending to scheduled committee work.

“I needed to put myself at a place where I would be safe so that I could also protect and defend the interest of my client for the benefit of her children, particularly the four-year-old who is waiting for the release of her mother. And that is why I had to drive to safety,” he explained.

“I’ve come to Parliament, my colleagues are behind me, and I thank them very much.”

The MP further alleged that the woman attempted to take him away while he was travelling to Parliament.

“So from there, I had to drive to Parliament because I was also required to do committee work in Parliament. And so, she attempted to kidnap me whilst I was on my way to Parliament,” Mr Baffour Awuah narrated at a press briefing in Parliament shortly after the incident.
