Heavy machinery arrives at Lamu port ahead of Ksh.2T Dangote refinery project

The Port of Lamu has received a consignment of heavy machinery ahead of the planned construction of the Ksh.2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery.

According to a statement by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the MV Da Yang, carrying 2,930 metric tonnes of construction equipment, docked at the port as preparations gather pace for the groundbreaking ceremony expected next week.

The refinery is planned as the first oil refinery north of Kenya and will process crude oil from Lokichar in Turkana County, as well as supplies from other parts of East and Southern Africa.

KPA CEO Captain William Ruto welcomed the vessel and brought it alongside before presenting its master, Captain Wang Shengli, with a certificate of first call and a plaque.

Ruto said the arrival marked an important step towards the development of the refinery.

“The arrival of this vessel is very critical and shows the Government’s commitment to ensuring this project succeeds. It will be a game changer for the entire region,” said Captain Ruto.

The Port of Lamu is expected to play a key role in the refinery's operations by supporting marine activities and handling petroleum tankers once the facility becomes operational.

KPA says it is also preparing to handle increased cargo volumes associated with the project, with the authority expected to support vessel and cargo operations at the port.

The refinery is expected to supply refined petroleum products to markets in Kenya and the wider region.

The planned groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for next week and will be presided over by President William Ruto, who began his 8-day development tour of the Coast region on Saturday.
