Lagos Governorship Debate Holds At 7 P.M. Today

The Nigeria Debate Consortium, a series of debates for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, will begin today with the Lagos governorship debate.

It is the first debate in the series, organised by the consortium, which comprises Channels Television, TVC News, Punch Newspaper, The Cable, and Vanguard Newspaper, in selected battleground states ahead of the 2027 elections.

The series will end with a presidential debate/townhall.

The Lagos debate will hold at 7:00 p.m. at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, beside Keystone Bank, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos State.

The major contenders for the Lagos governorship seat include incumbent Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Funso Doherty of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The organisers had earlier explained that the initiative would provide a credible, non-partisan platform for participating candidates to present their agendas, defend their policy choices and respond to questions on the issues that matter most to Lagos residents.

It will provide an opportunity for voters to put the candidates’ capacity, ideas and priorities — from transportation and infrastructure to security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth — under public scrutiny before the February 6, 2027, governorship elections.

The Consortium assured that the debate would adhere to established professional standards, with fairness, neutrality, equal opportunity and editorial independence as guiding principles.

It added that all participating candidates would be subject to the same rules, speaking times and moderation standards.

Channels Television stated the event reflects the media’s responsibility to inform the electorate and strengthen democratic accountability.

“Voters deserve more than campaign promises; they deserve clear answers, credible plans and an opportunity to assess those seeking their mandate. This debate will place issues, ideas and the future of Lagos at the centre of the electoral conversation.

“Our responsibility is to help citizens make informed choices based on what candidates propose and how convincingly they demonstrate their capacity to deliver,” it added.

Similarly, TVC News stressed the importance of issue-based engagement in the democratic process.

“A governorship debate is an opportunity for candidates to move beyond political rhetoric and demonstrate the substance of their vision for Lagos,” it said.

“Citizens need to understand not only what candidates promise, but how they intend to deliver. By creating a fair platform for this engagement, we are helping to promote accountability and a more informed electorate.”

The debate will be broadcast to national and digital audiences through the participating media organisations’ platforms.
