Katrin Hagemann, the European Union’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, has died suddenly at her residence in Harare aged 53.
The EU Delegation confirmed that the German diplomat died on Thursday, 3 September 2026, describing her death as “sudden and unexpected”. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Diplomatic sources told ZimLive that Hagemann had reportedly felt unwell after breakfast. One source said her driver found her unresponsive after arriving to collect her for work.
In a statement issued on Friday, the delegation said: “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the sudden and unexpected passing of Her Excellency Ms Katrin Hagemann on September 3, 2026.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues and all those who mourn this profound loss. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, there will be no further comments at this time.”
Hagemann took up her diplomatic posting in Zimbabwe in December 2025 after presenting her credentials to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Hagemann began her diplomatic career at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office before moving to the European Union Council Secretariat in 2006.
She subsequently joined the European External Action Service when it was established in 2011.
Between 2015 and 2019, she led the political section of the EU Delegation to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community. She was appointed deputy head of the EU Delegation to Kenya in 2019.
Hagemann, who held a degree in astronomy and physics, promoted stronger trade and investment relations between Zimbabwe and the European Union during her time in Harare.
She also spoke publicly about corruption, governance and Zimbabwe’s arrears-clearance efforts, while raising concerns over restrictions on opposition activities and what she described as the country’s shrinking civic space.
