Mzuzu Council workers seek audience with PS
Mzuzu City Council Workers Union representatives have said they will meet Secretary for Local Government and Rural Development Moses Chimphepo today at Capital Hill in Lilongwe in their push for a 25 percent salary increment.
After a three-day strike last week, the council offered a 10 percent hike, but the union has rejected it, escalating the matter to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
In an interview yesterday, Mzuzu City Council Workers Union chairperson Typen Kamanga said although they have returned to work, discussions are still ongoing.
He said: “We are still discussing. Our issue has not been resolved and we are going to hold a meeting tomorrow [today] with the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Local Government to address our concerns.”
Kamanga said their demand remains unchanged.
“We are going there hoping for positive feedback from the Principal Secretary, but if we come back with negative feedback, we will continue with the strike,” he said.
When contacted, the council’s spokesperson McDonald Gondwe declined to give details on what has transpired.
“Our issue remains confidential to the public since there is no formal agreement. We will provide information once everything is settled,” he said.
But when asked to confirm, Chimphepo denied receiving any formal communication about the scheduled meeting.
Last week, Mzuzu City Council workers downed their tools to push for a 25 percent salary increment after going three years without an increase amid rising cost of living.
