Anambra To Benefit From UNIDO Programme On OGREE Waste Management

Anambra State is one of the eight states in Nigeria on the frontline to benefit from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO implementation of the Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment, OGREE waste management.

Anambra, which is considered a “core state” for this UN programme to manage waste from used renewable energy sources like solar, stands to benefit from UNIDO’s support to ensure proper disposal of used off-grid waste in the State.

In a few years, OGREE waste is expected to become a major public health concern because of unprofessional extraction of valuable components from renewable energy equipment such as solar panels and batteries.

On Monday, the UNIDO team was in Anambra to commence training staff of the Anambra State Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders on OGREE waste management, and the week-long workshop is expected to highlight Anambra’s draft policy on OGREE waste management.

Speaking at the opening session, the UNIDO team lead, Ms. Emem Umana, who is UNIDO’s National Field Coordinator in Nigeria, thanked the Government of Anambra State for supporting the programme since inception in 2024.

“UNIDO expresses sincere appreciation to the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for his support to the programme since 2024,” Umana said. She also thanked the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, for his support to the programme.

According to Ms. Emem Umana, Anambra has shown serious commitment, which forced UNIDO to consider the state as a core state for the programme.

“Anambra has demonstrated strong commitment since the inception of this project,” she said, while calling on the participants to give the exercise all they can.

Responding, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, thanked the UNIDO team and conveyed the commitment and support of the Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, and the Government of Anambra State, as well as the State’s willingness to expand collaboration with UNIDO.

“The State Government is willing and open to deepen collaborations with UNIDO,” the Commissioner said, emphasizing Anambra’s focus on the environment.
