Morocco’s Jewish community is encouraging its members to vote in the September 23 parliamentary election but will not endorse a party or direct voters toward specific candidates, community representatives said.
The internal campaign targets Jewish citizens living in Morocco, while eligible voters abroad may participate through the proxy voting system available to registered Moroccans overseas.
Community representatives said voting decisions should remain personal and reflect each citizen’s preferred political program. They rejected treating Jewish Moroccans as a separate electoral bloc with distinct political demands.
Jacky Kadoch, president of the Jewish community in the Marrakech-Safi region, said political parties should serve Jewish citizens under the same policies and commitments applied to other Moroccans.
The community is not asking parties to include special measures in their platforms, he said. Matters specific to Jewish institutions have traditionally been handled with the Interior Ministry.
Kadoch praised state support for preserving Jewish heritage, including mellahs, synagogues and cemeteries.
He estimated that fewer than 2,000 to 2,200 Jewish people now live in Morocco, with some regions home to only 20 or 30 community members.
