Briley King’s Sudden Music Career Ignites Debate Over Her Rise Alongside Marcus King

Briley King has stepped into a new chapter of her career, announcing a move into professional music despite previously presenting herself as someone more comfortable supporting her husband, country and Americana singer Marcus King.

The 35-year-old recently revealed that she was launching a career as a singer-songwriter, announcing the development on Instagram and updating her professional profile to identify herself as an artist.

Her debut has already taken her to one of country music’s most recognisable stages: the Grand Ole Opry.

Grand Ole Opry Appearance Comes Quickly

Briley’s appearance at the Grand Ole Opry came less than two weeks after she publicly announced her new direction.

Her husband was reportedly present for the performance, although a Nashville source said Marcus deliberately kept his distance so that his wife could have the spotlight.

The rapid progression has attracted attention because performing at the Opry is traditionally regarded as a significant milestone for country musicians.

New Record Deal Marks Career Shift

The Opry appearance followed Briley’s signing with Atlantic Outpost, the Nashville-based country and Americana imprint of Atlantic Music Group.

She has since released two original songs, “Bad Guy” and “Keepin’ Caroline”, marking a shift from accompanying Marcus on stage to developing material under her own name.

The move has prompted considerable discussion about how quickly she has moved into the professional country music space.

Her Earlier Public Image Comes Under Scrutiny

Much of the debate centres on Briley’s previous comments about performing and fame.

She has described herself as Marcus’s “little bird” and has previously suggested that she did not particularly enjoy appearing on stage.

In a TikTok comment about performing alongside her husband, she wrote that she did not believe she was as talented as him but joined him because it made him happy.

Her increasing appearances with Marcus, however, have gradually placed her more prominently in front of audiences.

Briley Has Performed With Marcus for Years

Her involvement in music did not begin with her recent solo announcement.

Briley has joined Marcus during concerts, festivals and other performances, including an appearance at Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival and a performance at Stagecoach.

She also contributed background vocals to Marcus’s 2024 album, “Mood Swings”.

The couple have additionally performed together at the Grand Ole Opry, meaning her latest appearance was not her first time on the historic stage.

Earlier Singing Career Resurfaces

Records and archived online material also indicate that Briley had musical ambitions before meeting Marcus.

Performances under her maiden name, Briley Hussey, date back at least to 2016. Some of those recordings have since disappeared from streaming platforms, although older videos remain online.

A 2017 video shows her performing a cover of Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel” at the Kinston, North Carolina, BBQ Festival.

She has also spoken about being interested in performing from a young age, saying she participated in singing, dancing, theatre and other activities while growing up.

Viral Cover Helped Bring Her Voice Wider Attention

More recently, Briley attracted widespread attention after performing a cover of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” backstage at the Marcus King Band Family Reunion Festival.

The performance generated millions of views and became one of the moments that helped introduce her singing to a much larger online audience.

She has now moved beyond covers by releasing original material as part of her formal music launch.

Little Bird Trucking Built Her Own Business Profile

Briley’s professional identity has also extended beyond music.

After marrying Marcus, she founded Little Bird Trucking, a trucker-hat business named after the nickname her husband uses for her.

The company gained visibility after its hats were worn by performers including Lainey Wilson and Post Malone. The products were also stocked at the Grand Ole Opry store, where Briley collaborated on a collection connected to Minnie Pearl’s centenary celebrations.

The business helped establish Briley as a recognisable personality within Nashville’s fashion and entertainment circles.

Critics Question Her Access to Nashville’s Industry

Her growing profile has also generated criticism from some Nashville insiders who argue that her relationship with Marcus has helped accelerate opportunities that other aspiring performers might spend years pursuing.

One industry executive told the Daily Mail that it was notable how quickly she was given access to the Opry stage, while suggesting that other artists without similar connections could face greater difficulty obtaining comparable opportunities.

Those comments represent the views of individuals quoted by the publication rather than an established finding about how Briley’s opportunities were secured.

Online Reaction Has Been Divided

Social media reactions to Briley’s career launch have ranged from support to accusations that her marriage provided a shortcut into the music industry.

Some Reddit users questioned whether her relationship with Marcus played a significant role in her professional ambitions, while others criticised what they perceived as a change in her public narrative.

Briley has appeared to respond to some of the criticism with humour, including posts referencing the “gold digger” label and joking about people who dislike her.

Neither online commentary nor anonymous accusations establishes that she used her marriage improperly to obtain professional opportunities.

Marriage to Marcus King Changed Her Public Profile

Briley and Marcus met around July 2021 and became engaged roughly seven months later.

They married in February 2023 at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center, with Country Music Hall of Famer Jamey Johnson officiating and Leah Blevins performing during the ceremony.

Marcus has spoken publicly about their first meeting, recalling that Briley joined him on his tour bus and that they spent time listening and singing to music together.

He has also spoken warmly about his relationship with her in interviews.

Briley Says Her Life Changed After Meeting Marcus

Before meeting Marcus, Briley has said she was working at a bank and living what she described as an ordinary working life.

In a 2025 interview with Country Living, she spoke positively about being alongside Marcus and described herself as enjoying her role as his “sidecar”.

Her more recent career moves suggest a shift toward establishing an identity separate from simply being known as the wife of a successful musician.

Questions Over Her Past Statements Continue

Briley has recently addressed questions about her previous musical experience by explaining that she had performed covers at weddings, bars and online while working other jobs.

That explanation has prompted renewed discussion because earlier descriptions of her music career had focused on her lack of experience as a recording artist and songwriter.

The discrepancy has been highlighted by critics and industry sources, although Briley’s newer account indicates that she had been performing informally for years before beginning her current professional music career.

Marcus King Has Acknowledged the Pressure of Public Scrutiny

The attention surrounding Briley has also affected the wider public image of her marriage.

Marcus previously told Rolling Stone that dealing with online claims about himself and his partner was among the more difficult aspects of living in the public eye.

He said he often found himself reluctant to respond to allegations because doing so could give additional attention to comments he considered untrue.

With Briley now formally entering the music industry, the couple’s personal and professional lives are likely to remain closely connected in the public conversation.

A New Chapter Begins for Briley King

Briley’s transition from entrepreneur and frequent guest performer to recording artist represents a significant change in her public career.

She has secured a record deal, released original songs and performed at the Grand Ole Opry within a short period.

While questions about her route into Nashville’s music industry continue to circulate, her next challenge will be establishing herself through her own music and performances as she begins what she describes as a new chapter as a professional artist.
