The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) says institutional, licensing and value-addition reforms introduced in the gold sector have generated 4,866 direct jobs in less than two years, as the country works to deepen local participation in the industry.
Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi disclosed that the figure comprises 361 public-sector roles and 4,505 private-sector positions.
He noted that the reforms are also opening additional opportunities across the gold value chain for artisanal smelters, jewellers and young entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the African Minerals Policy Forum Mining in Motion 2026, Mr Gyamfi emphasised that African nations must develop mineral economies that deliver decent jobs and broader opportunities for their people while safeguarding the environment.
He maintained that the true measure of the sector’s success should go beyond production figures to include the economic and social benefits retained by local communities.
“Support for private enterprise and job creation in the mineral and mining economy, must therefore be a priority for all African nations,” he said.
Mr Gyamfi further stressed that mineral sovereignty should create avenues for Africans to become mine owners, geologists, engineers, equipment suppliers, financiers, processors, refiners and traders, instead of remaining limited to low-value activities within the mining chain.
