Psychiatric evaluation sought for ex-police trainee accused of attacking colleague
A former police trainee accused of beating his colleague with a piece of metal at the National Police College of Jamaica is to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at the request of his defence attorney.
Sylvester Williams, who was initially charged with wounding with intent, is now facing the lesser charge of unlawful wounding.
When the matter was mentioned in the St Catherine Parish Court on Thursday, October 22, the court heard that an attempt to resolve the matter through mediation had failed.
Mediation had previously been recommended, but the unsuccessful effort has left the case heading towards trial.
The matter was postponed until November 26, when a trial date is to be decided.
The allegations stem from an incident about 12:30 a.m. on September 12, 2025, when a dispute reportedly broke out between Williams and his colleague at a dormitory at the National Police College in Twickenham Park, St Catherine.
The disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Williams reportedly used a piece of metal to strike the complainant several times, causing bleeding wounds.
The injured trainee was taken to Spanish Town General Hospital and later released to the training college’s medical centre, where he was admitted for his injuries.
An investigation was subsequently launched, resulting in Williams’ arrest and charge.
