All 23 Banks in Ghana Now Meet Regulatory Capital Requirements, Says BoG Governor

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has announced that all 23 banks operating in the country have successfully satisfied the regulatory capital requirements. This development signals the conclusion of a recovery journey that started in the aftermath of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

According to Dr Asiama, every bank in Ghana’s banking sector has now achieved compliance with the capital thresholds set by the central bank. The announcement represents a significant milestone for the industry, which had faced considerable strain following the debt restructuring exercise.

The Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, introduced as part of Ghana’s efforts to address its fiscal challenges, had a substantial impact on the financial positions of banks across the country. The programme involved restructuring government debt, which affected the asset quality and capital levels of many financial institutions. As a result, several banks required time and strategic measures to rebuild their capital buffers and return to compliance.
