Call for Tanzanian women to embark on nuclear science and engineering

**DAR ES SALAAM: **YOUNG women aspiring to careers in science have been urged to seize scholarship and mentorship opportunities backed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to enter specialised fields, including nuclear science and engineering.

Assistant Director of Science, Technology and Innovation in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Harun Makandi made the call during the opening of the Russia-Africa Wome Forum held in Dar es Salaam today stating that the government support, favourable policies and the presence of successful women leaders are creating opportunities for young women to participate in scientific research and contribute to national development.

Giving his remarks, the director challenged challenged emerging female scientists to take advantage of the opportunities available to pursue studies in physics, chemistry, nuclear engineering and the application of nuclear technology in healthcare.

He cited scholarship initiatives supported by President Samia, saying they are helping talented women from different backgrounds access specialised education, including fields that have traditionally attracted limited female participation.

“This is actually happening now, some Tanzanian students are already pursuing studies in nuclear-related disciplines in South Africa and elsewhere,” he said.

Dr Makandi said young women also needed role models to inspire them to pursue scientific careers, pointing to women in leadership positions in Tanzania’s nuclear sector as examples of what they could achieve.

He singled out the Director-General of the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission as an inspiration, urging young scientists to learn from women who have reached senior positions and contributed to advancing nuclear technology.

“Policies and funding alone are not enough unless young people can see successful women whose achievements demonstrate that scientific careers are within their reach,” he noted.

Dr Makandi encouraged participants to use the forum to build networks, exchange knowledge and establish partnerships that would open further opportunities for emerging scientists.

He said greater participation by women in science is essential to ensuring that the country develops the skills needed to apply nuclear technology in healthcare, agriculture and clean water supply.
