Point-of-sale platform Pilot has launched Navigator, an AI layer that lets South African restaurant operators query their own trading data in plain language rather than building reports — and it arrives in a market that has become considerably more contested in the past three months.
Operators can ask Navigator about sales trends, compare supplier pricing, flag purchasing anomalies or identify menu items losing profitability as input costs shift. Queries spanning millions of data lines return in seconds.
A named customer with a recovered cost
The most substantive element of the launch is a beta case with an operator willing to be identified.
Dean Teubes of The Palms Plett & Club Haus in Plettenberg Bay used Navigator to detect supplier pricing anomalies and unexpected increases, took the discrepancies back to suppliers, and secured credits — converting an AI-generated insight into recovered cash.
That is a modest example, and it is more than most AI product launches in this market provide. Several enterprise AI announcements iAfrica has covered in recent weeks arrived with no named customer and no disclosed outcome at all.
Pilot says early testing showed Navigator useful across roles: owners tracking overall profitability, and purchasing and food-cost teams investigating supplier pricing and menu-level margins.
The market it lands in
Restaurants are the weakest part of South African hospitality. Statistics South Africa’s June 2026 Food and Beverage Survey recorded real income at restaurants and coffee shops falling 2.3% quarter-on-quarter — the single largest drag on the industry — even as the sector’s year-on-year figure moved into modest growth.
Yoco’s own research found 46% of independent business owners less confident than at the start of the year, with more than half citing pressure on household spending.
In that environment, the value proposition is narrow and concrete: catching a supplier increase or a collapsing menu margin in the week it happens rather than the quarter after.
Suddenly crowded
Pilot is not entering an empty field. Yoco acquired Dyner, an AI-native restaurant operating system, in June, and launched its own AI business agent with restaurant-specific features weeks later — a platform already serving more than 200,000 South African small businesses. Orda Africa builds restaurant POS and back-office tools for African operators. Fusepay, Fincart and Munich’s Knowlix are pushing comparable “AI operating system” positioning at adjacent merchant segments.
Pilot’s argument is domain depth. Thirty-five years building alongside South African hospitality businesses, it says, shaped how Navigator reads restaurant data — a purpose-built model rather than a generic analytics overlay.
That is a genuine moat, and it also identifies Pilot’s position: the incumbent, with the installed base and the data history, being attacked by better-capitalised AI-native entrants. Whichever side wins, the operator gets a cheaper tool.
“Restaurant operators don’t need more reports. They need to know what requires their attention every day, and what they can do about it,” said Glenn Miller, Pilot’s managing director. Navigator, he said, helps owners “move from looking at what happened to understanding why it happened and deciding what to do next.”
Navigator is the first product under Pilot’s repositioning as a hospitality control centre, adding an intelligence layer across its point-of-sale, payments, purchasing and performance tools. The company operates across Africa and into Europe.
It is now available to all Pilot clients. The company has not said whether it is included in existing subscriptions or charged separately, nor disclosed how many clients that covers.
