‘He Told Me I Betrayed Him’: Paul Mackenzie’s Son Speaks After Verdict

Years before the mass graves of Shakahola horrified the world, a young boy sitting in a Malindi church made a decision that would ultimately save his life.

Dan Mackenzie, the 24-year-old son of convicted cult leader Paul Mackenzie, walked away from his father’s church long before followers began relocating to the isolated Kilifi forest. Following the landmark ruling by the Mombasa High Court, where Justice Diana Kavedza-Mochache found Paul Mackenzie and 28 co-accused guilty of 191 counts of murder, Dan spoke out about his narrow escape, the abuse he endured, and his relief that justice has finally been served.

A Childhood Marked by Harsh Discipline

Growing up within Good News International Ministries was anything but peaceful for Dan. He revealed that his disillusionment began at a young age due to severe and uncompromising discipline. When he was just 12 years old, he was forced to undergo a week-long fast.

On another occasion, he endured nearly three hours of physical beatings by church members for resisting church activities and refusing to comply with strict rules.

“I was forced when I was young, when I was 12, to fast for a whole week,” Dan recalled.

These harrowing experiences ignited a quiet rebellion. As the rift between father and son widened, Paul Mackenzie eventually gave up on him, telling him he was entirely on his own. Dropping out of school in Class Seven, Dan left the church fold behind, moved away from the movement’s toxic environment, and carved out an independent life working as a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) rider in Malindi.

Because he had already detached himself from the doctrines years prior, Dan never joined the mass migration to the Shakahola wilderness, a choice that shielded him from the horrors that unfolded between 2021 and 2023.

Relief and Closure After the Verdict

Reacting to the court’s monumental 1,000-page judgment, Dan expressed a profound sense of relief rather than grief. He noted that the verdict brings much-needed closure not only to his own turbulent past with his father but also to the families and victims shattered by the tragedy.

“I have been a victim too from what he was doing over there in Shakahola. A bit relief to us and to the victims that justice has happened to them. I am not sad; I am okay and relaxed. It’s him; I did not do it; it is not me. Yes, he is guilty,” Dan stated.

Following the conviction, Dan revealed that he briefly spoke with his father behind bars. Instead of remorse, the conversation brought familiar accusations. According to Dan, his father accused him of betrayal.

“I’ve already spoken to him. He told me that I’ve betrayed him. I don’t know from what. Nothing, I have nothing to say to him,” he said.

Looking Forward

While Dan managed to escape his father’s immediate orbit years ago, the broader family toll remains heavy. He shared that three of his sisters and two of his brothers were successfully rescued and placed into a safe rescue center.

He expressed deep hope that his younger siblings will find a stable, positive path forward and will not have to bear the lifelong burden of their father’s destructive legacy.

As the legal system prepares to hand down formal sentencing on November 6, 2026, Dan’s testimony stands as a striking reminder of the psychological control once wielded inside the church and the courage it took to break free.
