Four investigated over Murcia wildfire that burned 150 hectares
Four people are under investigation on suspicion of causing a major wildfire through gross negligence after a poorly maintained, unauthorised power line was identified as the likely cause.
The fire began on 2 June in the El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park, near the Murcia districts of Los Garres and Lages. It burned around 150 hectares of pine forest and Mediterranean scrub. About 50 homes were evacuated, forcing roughly 100 residents to leave their houses while emergency teams, including the Military Emergencies Unit, tackled the blaze.
The Guardia Civil said investigators found that a private low-voltage line supplying several homes lacked authorisation and had not been properly maintained. Those responsible for managing it are being investigated.
The fire affected protected natural areas, part of the Torreagüera Royal Drovers’ Route and the site of a fourth-century late Roman fortress, which is listed as a heritage asset. The Guardia Civil investigation involved its environmental crime unit, SEPRONA specialists and regional environmental officers.
