The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of an officer, CPL Alfred Louis, and members of his team over the alleged shooting of a commercial driver, identified as Anthony Obodo, in the Agip/Ada George axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Obodo was said to be a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) and was awaiting his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up before the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the command, ASP Agabe Blessing Karbolo, who confirmed the incident in a statement over the weekend, said there was an altercation between the occupants of the vehicle driven by the deceased and the policemen, which led to the incident.
She said the affected officer and members of his team were being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
While condemning the action by the personnel, ASP Karbolo said such conduct did not reflect professionalism in policing, promising that the police would not relent in taking strict disciplinary action against erring officers.
She said: “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a video circulating on social media on a shooting incident in which a police officer allegedly shot at a motorist while on wheels, resulting in the death of the occupant.
“Preliminary information indicates that on August 27, 2026, there was an altercation between the occupant, one Anthony Obodo (m), and there was a scuffle between the duo, which led to gunshots and subsequently the death of the victim. Two other passers-by were also injured.
“Following the incident, the alleged officer, CPL Alfred Louis, was attacked and assaulted by an angry mob, leading to him sustaining multiple injuries. The officer and members of his team are currently at the State CID and will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
“The command wishes to state unequivocally that the action is totally condemnable and does not reflect professionalism in policing. It will not relent in taking strict disciplinary action against erring police officers.
“The Rivers State Police Command is not a shield for anybody engaging in unethical conduct and putting the Nigeria Police Force in disorder,” she said.
