Ajax striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed that Nigeria international Victor Osimhen advised him to honour injured team-mate Kasper Dolberg by showing the Danish forward’s shirt to supporters.
Arokodare made the gesture after scoring in Ajax’s 1-1 draw against NEC on Saturday at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.
The striker said the idea came from Osimhen, who plays for Turkish champions Galatasaray, after Dolberg suffered a knee injury while training with the Denmark national team during the international break.
Speaking after the match, Arokodare said, as quoted by Habersarikirmizi: “I wanted to do something like this [show Dolberg’s shirt to the fans]. Or rather, it wasn’t my idea; Osimhen told me, ‘You should do something like this,’ and I did. I thank him for that.”
Dolberg underwent successful surgery on his right knee in Copenhagen on Tuesday and will now begin his rehabilitation.
The 29-year-old sustained the injury during a training session with Denmark and is expected to focus on his recovery before returning to action.
Osimhen had previously made a similar gesture at Galatasaray, displaying Mauro Icardi’s shirt to the club’s supporters after the Argentine striker suffered an injury.
Arokodare’s tribute to Dolberg therefore followed a gesture previously made by his compatriot, highlighting the bond between players even when injuries keep them away from the pitch.
