Spring cleaning without the all-day overhaul

With summer approaching, there is still time to clear out clutter, organise neglected cupboards and make everyday cleaning more manageable, without turning the entire home upside down.

Spring cleaning often brings to mind hours of sorting, scrubbing and reorganising, but a home refresh does not have to happen all at once. Starting with one cupboard or drawer can help households make progress without creating an overwhelming list of jobs.

South African home-care brand GoodBasics has shared a five-step approach to seasonal cleaning, focusing on practical changes that can help keep household spaces organised beyond spring.

1. Start where the clutter builds up

The cleaning cupboard is a useful place to begin, as half-used bottles, duplicate products and items bought for one-off tasks can accumulate until it becomes difficult to find what is needed.

Remove everything from the cupboard and assess the contents before putting anything back. Check labels and expiry dates where applicable, and follow each product’s storage and use instructions.

Group cleaning supplies according to their purpose, such as products for floors, glass and other surfaces. GoodBasics also suggests considering whether products that have not been used for a year are still necessary.

The aim is to keep what serves a purpose rather than simply rearranging items that are no longer needed.

2. Find the spaces that are easy to overlook

Clutter is not always confined to obvious places. Linen cupboards, kitchen pantries, clothing drawers and the familiar drawer filled with old cables and chargers can all become difficult to manage over time.

Rather than attempting to tackle every room, choose one neglected area and focus on it.

Giving the task a clear goal, such as sorting the top shelf of a linen cupboard or clearing out unused technology accessories, makes it easier to get started and finish the job.

It is also worth considering why the clutter accumulated, as a drawer without a clear purpose, for example, can quickly become a catch-all again unless there is a better system for storing its contents.

3. Give everyday items a proper place

Once an area has been selected, remove its contents so that each item can be assessed individually.

Return only what is needed and assign it a consistent place, whether that is a shelf, storage container or designated section of a cupboard.

Leaving some space between items can make them easier to access and allow room for future changes. Filling every available shelf may create the appearance of order, but it can make a space harder to maintain.

The most useful organisation system is one that works for the people using it and can be kept up without having to repeat a major clear-out every few weeks.

4. Dispose of unwanted products responsibly

After sorting through household items, consider what can be reused, donated or recycled, and what needs to be discarded.

Empty containers may be recyclable depending on their material and local recycling rules.

Unopened products that are still usable may be suitable for donation where accepted, while unwanted or expired cleaning products should be handled according to their labels and local waste-management guidance.

Cleaning products should never be mixed to use up leftovers, as combining different chemicals can create hazardous reactions. Containers that have held cleaning products should also never be reused for food or drinks.

A seasonal clear-out is an opportunity to reduce unnecessary waste, provided unwanted items are dealt with safely.

5. Make small resets part of the routine

A home refresh does not need to be reserved for spring. Short, regular check-ins can help prevent clutter from building up and reduce the amount of work needed later.

Households could revisit one cupboard or drawer every few months, focusing on the areas that need the most attention. Others may prefer to use labelled containers or a more structured storage system.

There is no single approach that works for every home. The priority is to establish habits that are practical to maintain, rather than creating an elaborate system that becomes another task to manage.

As warmer weather approaches, clearing out unnecessary items and making better use of existing storage can help households prepare for the season ahead.

For GoodBasics, the emphasis is on manageable changes rather than an ambitious, one-day overhaul. That means there is no need to tackle every room at once.

Choose one space, decide what genuinely needs to stay and build from there. A few focused tasks can help make everyday cleaning and organising easier to maintain.
