Diamonds no longer decide Botswana’s outlook alone

On 11 September, S&P Global Ratings kept Botswana’s credit rating at BBB−, one notch above the level where investors stop treating a country as “investment grade”. S&P also kept the negative outlook. Most of the coverage in newswires treated it as a story about diamonds.

S&P has reviewed Botswana every six months, in March and September. Each review sets out what would have to happen for the outlook to move from negative back to stable. That passage changed between the last two reviews.
