Campus life in Kenya has become an endurance test — and students deserve better
By Nicholas Mwendwa
The university dream arrives early. Secondary school students picture open campuses, new friendships and the intoxicating freedom of adulthood. Reality, for many Kenyan undergraduates in 2026, looks nothing like that.
Being a university student in Kenya today resembles military training dressed in academic clothing. Lecturer strikes stretch for weeks, leaving students in limbo while academic calendars collapse around them. The cost of living squeezes those already surviving on the margins. Student unrest periodically shuts down campuses. And then there are the quiet, bureaucratic cruelties — a student who attends every class throughout a semester only to discover, at examination time, that a registration glitch bars them from sitting the paper. Months of effort, erased by a system failure nobody warned them about.
Financial pressure runs beneath all of it. Food, accommodation and transport consume money that many students simply do not have. When social activities carry a price tag, those without funds are quietly excluded from campus life — a loneliness that compounds the academic strain.
None of this is inevitable. University administrations must improve communication, stabilise academic schedules and resolve registration bottlenecks before they become crises. The government must strengthen student financial assistance and address the structural cost pressures that make basic survival a daily calculation for thousands of young Kenyans.
University education should build futures, not break the people pursuing them. Students who fight to be there deserve a system that fights for them in return.
