Star Wars actor John Boyega has revealed his wife Tae has given birth to their first child after confirming they secretly got married two years ago.
The actor, 34, announced their joyful baby news in a sweet Instagram post on Wednesday as he cradled his newborn son.
John shared photos from Tae’s baby shower where the actress, 48, looked incredible in a plunging blue dress.
He wrote: ‘Our bundle of joy has been with us for some time now but thank you for all the well wishes. Also my sister is about to pop! Wish her well too! Back to feeding this big baby!’
John revealed he and Tae tied the knot in a ‘small ceremony’ but said they would love to have a traditional Nigerian wedding in the future.
‘We both like the idea of celebrating something established, rather than celebrating the entry,’ he told The Guardian. ‘And by then, we’ll have to shut Nigeria down!’
John then said his life feels ‘completely fulfilled’ because he also has a young stepson.
He added: ‘So, you know, my life is completely, completely fulfilled in terms of family. It’s been so nice with the timing. Us being parents is funny! I just want to make sure I’m present, I’m consistent and full of love.’
John shared that he bought Tae two wedding rings; a band that holds ‘sentimental’ value from Walmart and another he got later on.
‘This is the one we decided to pick up spontaneously because I just wanted the ring on my finger, so we went to Walmart to get this,’ he said. ‘It was a lovely trip to Walmart. Shout out, Walmart Canoga Park!’
John previously said that the killing of his friend Damilola Taylor ‘shaped’ who he is today as he opened up about the slaying of his friend at the age of ten.
In 2024, he spoke about how he was caught up in the youngster’s death after Damilola was slashed with a broken bottle and left to die on November 27 2000.
The actor, then aged eight, and his sister Grace were among the last people to see their friend alive before he was attacked by brothers Ricky and Danny Preddie in Peckham, south-east London, and left to bleed out.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Last Word podcast, John said losing Damilola had been ‘life-changing’ – and that a reading of a poem the ten-year-old had written at his funeral showed how his friend had ‘dreamed to be more.’
John went on to pursue a career in acting, appearing on stage before his breakthrough role in Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block, about a gang of teens who fight off an alien invasion in south London.
He told the podcast’s John Taylor: ‘From the hours we left him in Peckham to the hours when I went home, and then the police was at our door and there was a whole investigation that we were involved in, (it) was definitely life changing for me, definitely altered my perspective.
‘Even though I was young, it was a shock to understand how mortality worked. To think that somebody as young as me could pass away in such a horrific way was hard for me to understand or comprehend.
‘And I definitely think Damilola’s tragic (killing) has definitely shaped me through the years and just affected my perspective on certain things and it definitely affected the community too.
‘I mean, my sister, in particular, Grace, who was very, very close with Damilola, went through a lot, and my dad had to front that and try to protect her in that journey. It was definitely a lot for everybody to take.’
The actor has not been afraid to shine a spotlight on his own industry – openly criticising Disney over how it handled his Star Wars character, Finn.
John’s face was the first fans of the sci-fi saga saw when a teaser trailer for the first in the latest trilogy of films, The Force Awakens, was released in November 2014.
But while the character, a Stormtrooper who then rebels against the villains of the First Order, was given a large amount of screentime in the first of the new trilogy, he was sidelined in later films and given less screentime.
John claimed Disney sidelined him because of his race, telling British GQ in 2020: ‘What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.’
He added: ‘Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, ‘Black this and black that and you shouldn’t be a Stormtrooper’. Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that I’m this way. That’s my frustration.’
