Atletico piled on the misery for Man Utd in their first UCL away day, beating Michael Carrick’s men 2-0 in Madrid.
A nightmare start for Man Utd saw Atletico score within the first minute. United responded with a better performance but it was still Atletico who hit the bar twice after that opener.
Leny Yoro’s red card in the second half interrupted a brilliant game from him until that point, and Atletico doubled their lead soon after to end the game as a contest.
Here are the Man Utd player ratings from the 2-0 loss as Michael Carrick firmly under pressure now.
Senne Lammens – 6
Wrong-footed for the first goal and helpless for the second. Quiet otherwise.
Diogo Dalot – 4
Caught napping for Atletico’s opener. Improved as the game went on but damage was done.
Leny Yoro – 7
Was the best player on the pitch until he was unfairly sent off for a last-man tackle.
Lisandro Martinez – 6
No glaring errors, although United needed him more to beat Atletico’s press.
Ayden Heaven – 6.5
Handled himself well at LB, particularly in possession. Unlucky to slide for the opener, which wrong-footed Lammens.
Carlos Baleba – 7
Continued from where he left off against Spurs, bringing a lot of energy and drive on and off the ball.
Andrey Santos – 5
Looked rattled at times by the atmosphere resulting in poor passes but didn’t stop showing for the ball.
Bruno Fernandes – 3
Left his position on the wing to chase after the ball, causing the team to lose shape. Ineffective passing. His performances this season might well end up being remembered as the cause behind Carrick’s sack.
Youri Tielemans – 5
Found wanting in an advanced position outside of a couple of good passes. Failed to lead the press. Too easily bypassed.
Marcus Rashford – 5
Scuffed a good chance after a brilliant pass from Martinez. Worked hard in defence.
Bryan Mbeumo – 6
Had the best chance of the game through his dribbling and movement. Looked dangerous when he had the ball in the final third.
Substitutes
Mason Mount – 6
Moved the ball around and showed much-needed off-ball movement but to no avail.
Joshua Zirkzee – 5
Anonymous display as the striker.
Amad – 6
Went on one dangerous run but always up against it once United were down to ten men.
Harry Maguire – 6
Came on late for aerial threat and to shore up the defence after Yoro’s sending off.
Matheus Cunha – 6
Didn’t lack effort but had a thankless job of damage limitation at that point.
