Jazz Chisholm Jr. Fires Back at Yankees Fans After Being Booed in Crushing Playoff Exit

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has responded to New York Yankees fans who booed him during the team’s dramatic playoff elimination on Wednesday night.

The Yankees’ postseason campaign ended at Yankee Stadium after they were swept 3-0 by the Tampa Bay Rays, with tensions rising among supporters as New York’s hopes of reaching the World Series disappeared.

Chisholm was among the players who received criticism from the stands, prompting him to question the decision to boo players during a crucial playoff game.

Yankees star says fans should support the team

Speaking after the game, Chisholm said the priority should have been encouraging the players as they attempted to keep their season alive.

“It’s the playoffs and we’re trying to win games,” he told reporters. “You’re booing a guy that’s trying to help the team win and you’re hearing boos instead of trying to hype guys up.”

The infielder added that the reaction did not personally affect him, pointing out that even Yankees superstar Aaron Judge has previously been booed by the home crowd.

“Like I said, at the end of the day it didn’t hurt me,” Chisholm said. “I’ve seen Aaron Judge get booed here too. Who am I? He’s a three-time MVP.”

Chisholm still wants to remain a Yankee

Despite the criticism from sections of the crowd, Chisholm indicated that he would like to continue his career in New York.

The Bahamas-born player is approaching free agency with his Yankees contract set to expire, leaving uncertainty over whether he will return for another season.

Chisholm nevertheless spoke positively about his time with the organisation and recalled growing up as a Yankees supporter while watching Derek Jeter.

“I grew up as a Yankee fan. Being from the Bahamas, watching Derek Jeter. I loved my time as a Yankee,” he said.

All-Star and Silver Slugger memories highlighted

Chisholm also pointed to the achievements he recorded during his time in New York as reasons for his positive feelings towards the franchise.

He said he had enjoyed significant personal success with the Yankees, including an All-Star season and a Silver Slugger award.

“I had great times as a Yankee – had an All-Star year, had a Silver Slugger year,” Chisholm said. “Who doesn’t want to stay with the team you have such great times with?”

His comments leave the door open to a return despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the team’s playoff departure.

Volpe home run overturned after fan interference

Chisholm’s comments came on a night that also featured one of the most contentious moments of the Yankees’ elimination.

With New York trailing in the sixth inning, Anthony Volpe appeared to hit a two-run home run that would have levelled the game at 4-4.

The ball travelled 357 feet into left field after Volpe connected with a 96mph sinker from Rays right-hander Griffin Jax.

However, replay officials determined that a spectator had reached over the wall and interfered with Tampa Bay left fielder Victor Mesa Jr., who was attempting to make a leaping catch.

Replay review wipes out potential tying homer

The play was initially ruled a home run, but a lengthy review overturned the call.

The decision meant that the Yankees lost the potential tying runs from the scoreboard, with the incident becoming another source of frustration for the home crowd.

The fan involved in the play was subsequently escorted from Yankee Stadium by security and police.

Incident recalls famous Jeffrey Maier play

The controversy also brought back memories of a famous Yankees postseason incident involving Jeffrey Maier nearly three decades earlier.

During the 1996 American League Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles, the young Yankees fan reached over the right-field wall while Derek Jeter’s ball was in flight.

There was no replay system available at the time, and umpires ruled the play a home run rather than fan interference. New York eventually went on to win the World Series.

Yankees eliminated after three-game sweep

The circumstances were very different this time around.

The Yankees ultimately lost 4-3, with the overturned Volpe home run proving particularly significant because the two runs would have tied the game.

The result completed a 3-0 series sweep for Tampa Bay and brought an end to New York’s postseason campaign.

For Chisholm, the defeat also leaves questions over his future with the Yankees, although his postgame comments made clear that he remains interested in staying with the club.
