Across 19,985 tests performed on the MyBroadband Speed Test platform up to 31 August 2026, the average download speed on its Unlimited Home network was 33.26Mbps, up from 30.68Mbps in 2025.
Upload speeds also increased from 8.27Mbps to 9.76Mbps, while latency improved from 50.65ms to 45.44ms.
While these speeds might not seem impressive compared to some results from mobile 5G tests, it is important to note that Rain caps the download speed of its entry-level Unlimited Home plan at 30Mbps.
Given that this speed is more than suitable for many households, it is reasonable to assume the plan is highly popular and plays a major role in pulling down the average.
The higher-end Unlimited Home Pro plan is priced at R799. Stepping up to best-effort speeds increases the price to R999.
Customers also have the option to add up to two range extenders for an extra R100 per month, bringing the total fee to R1,199.
Unlike the two other plans, Rain does not specify a speed cap for its most expensive package, with speeds described as “unlimited”.
The service uses Rain’s high-end 101 Pro router, which supports 5G-Advanced for 20% higher speeds than standard 5G. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 connectivity for optimal wireless home network coverage.
MyBroadband Insights looked at the top 10 fastest tests in the year-to-date on Rain to see what users could expect from its 5G network.
Nine of the top 10 tests had download speeds over 500Mbps, with the best measuring a speed of 652.19Mbps. The 10th-fastest test also managed a highly respectable 476.5Mbps.
The lowest latency recorded across all the tests was 4ms, while the highest was 75ms. These were exceptional cases, however. Most of the tests achieved latencies of 19ms, 20ms, or 21ms.

These results suggest that Rain’s fixed-5G could be highly suitable as an alternative to high-speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) or as a backup option.
World Wide Worx CEO Arthur Goldstuck recently wrote a review for Gadget on his 18-month experience using the top-end Rain Home Unlimited Premium package as his backup broadband connection.
Goldstuck described the service as superb, particularly as a “gap filler” for when his FTTH connection went offline.
“A phone hotspot can rescue a laptop, but it is a poor substitute for a home or office network with several connected devices,” Goldstuck said.
“The Rain system is already a broadband network in its own right, with the 101 xtender spreading coverage beyond the room containing the router.”
