France Records First Human Case of Shamonda Virus as Patient Dies

By Tgnews Reporter French health authorities have reported the first known human case of the Shamonda virus, a disease previously associated with livestock, after an infected patient died earlier this month.

The patient, who was severely immunocompromised, had been hospitalised for a serious medical condition before dying, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday by France’s health and agriculture ministries. The authorities said the virus had circulated in Africa and Asia for several decades but had never previously been detected in humans. “Despite circulating in Africa and Asia for several decades, the Shamonda virus has never previously been detected in humans,” the ministries said. Despite the development, French authorities said there was currently no identified health risk to the general public. They described the infection as an exceptional case involving a patient whose immune system was severely weakened, suggesting that the circumstances surrounding the infection were unusual. The announcement has drawn attention to the importance of monitoring diseases that primarily affect animals and investigating whether they can occasionally cross into humans. The Shamonda virus is an animal-associated virus known to circulate in parts of Africa and Asia. It has primarily been linked to livestock, particularly cattle. Its detection in a human marks a significant development in the understanding of the virus and its potential implications for human health. However, the reported case does not, by itself, establish that the virus can spread efficiently between humans or that it poses a wider public health threat. French authorities have not identified a risk to the general population at this time, although continued surveillance and scientific investigation remain important in understanding the circumstances of the infection. The case highlights the importance of monitoring diseases that circulate among animals, particularly where humans and livestock live in close contact. Such surveillance helps scientists identify unusual infections, investigate possible routes of transmission and assess whether a disease presents a potential threat to public health. The patient’s severely weakened immune system is also a significant detail, although further information would be needed to determine precisely how the infection occurred and what factors contributed to its severity. For now, French health authorities have emphasised that the infection appears to be exceptional and that no general public health risk has been identified. ~AFP Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
