UNESCO lauds Tanzania’s Tourism Ministry for preserving its World Heritage Sites

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S Ambassador to France and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Saidi Othman Yakubu, has commended the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism for its efforts to preserve the country’s World Heritage Sites and leverage them to promote tourism development.

Ambassador Yakubu made the remarks today, August 31, 2026, when he met with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Hassan Abbasi, to brief him on his recent working tour of various World Heritage Sites and key tourist attractions in the country.

The tour, which was coordinated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and conducted from August 14 to 28, 2026, took Ambassador Yakubu to several World Heritage Sites and major tourist attractions, including Kondoa, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Kilwa, Zanzibar and Selous.

During the tour, he held meetings and discussions with stakeholders involved in conservation and tourism.

Speaking during the meeting, Ambassador Yakubu said the tour had enabled him to witness significant achievements in the preservation of Tanzania’s natural and cultural heritage, improvement of tourism infrastructure and government efforts to enhance the value of the sites for the benefit of citizens and the national economy.

“I have witnessed the tremendous work being done by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and its institutions to protect our World Heritage Sites and promote tourism. These sites are not only a source of pride for Tanzania, but also valuable resources that can continue to attract tourists and investment, create employment and increase national revenue,” Ambassador Yakubu said.

He added that the experience gained during the tour would help strengthen Tanzania’s representation at UNESCO, particularly on matters relating to the conservation, management and sustainable development of World Heritage Sites.

For his part, Dr Abbasi commended Ambassador Yakubu for undertaking the tour and for his efforts to promote Tanzania internationally.

He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Ministry, Tanzania’s Permanent Representation to UNESCO and other conservation institutions to enhance the protection and sustainable development of the country’s heritage sites.
