How Tech Professionals Can Move to the UK Without a Job Offer

Most UK work visas need an employer to vouch for you. A company offers you a role, holds a sponsor licence and issues a certificate of sponsorship, and your right to stay is tied to that one job. If you run growth at a SaaS company, consult for several clients at once or plan to launch your own product, that's the first wall you hit.

One route skips it. The Global Talent visa lets you live and work in the UK on the strength of your own track record, with no job offer and no sponsor. Instead of an employer, your case is reviewed by Tech Nation, the organisation the UK government uses to assess applicants in tech. The Tech Nation endorsement route runs on evidence, and that's where most applications are decided.

It isn't only for engineers

The route is often described as a visa for developers, but the UK government's official guidance lists two kinds of applicant. A technical applicant might be a developer, engineer or data scientist. A business applicant has commercial, investment or digital product expertise in a technology company that creates software or hardware or processes data. Growth, product and commercial leaders sit on the business side.

One detail matters for marketers. Several of the endorsement criteria refer to work in a product-led digital technology company, so a career built in-house at a SaaS, app or platform business fits the route more naturally than agency work for other people's brands. Tech Nation publishes a full list of eligible roles, and it's worth reading before you plan anything.

Talent or Promise: pick the category your record supports

You apply either as a leader, called Exceptional Talent, or as a potential leader, called Exceptional Promise. Both ask you to show that others have recognised your work in digital technology in the last five years, plus at least two of the following:

• a record of innovation as a founder or senior executive of a product-led digital technology company;
• innovation as an employee working in a new digital technology field or concept;
• contributions to the sector outside your day job, such as mentoring or collaborative projects;
• technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions in a product-led digital technology company;
• research that has been published or endorsed by an expert.

Exceptional Promise applicants are likely to have under five years in technology, but the official guidance notes they can have a longer career in another type of work. That helps people who moved into tech from traditional marketing, media or consulting. The category also sets your timeline to settlement: under the current rules, three years for Exceptional Talent and five for Exceptional Promise. Reaching for the senior category with a record that fits the junior one is an avoidable way to weaken a strong case.

What strong evidence looks like

Your file is a CV of up to three pages, three letters of recommendation and up to ten pieces of evidence. Each letter has to come from an established expert in digital technology who has known your work for at least 12 months, and it must be written for this application, not recycled from a job search.

When Tech Nation assesses a case, it weighs the commercial impact of your work, its international reputation and, for founders, the money raised. In practice, that favours evidence of outcomes over evidence of activity:

What you're proving

Evidence that tends to help

Usually weaker on its own

Recognition by others

Talks at major industry events, press coverage of your work, awards judged by peers

Internal performance reviews, a list of certifications

Commercial contribution

A launch or growth programme with revenue, user or retention numbers, backed by company documents

Campaign reports that show reach or output without business results

Work outside your job

Mentoring programmes, open tools or templates other teams use, a community you built

One-off event attendance

Published research

Benchmark studies or reports picked up by others in the industry

Posts on your employer's blog with no outside pickup

If you might apply in a year or two, start keeping the proof now: dated dashboards, launch announcements, recordings of your talks and a shortlist of people who could write for you.

Timeline and costs

• Endorsement:

  you apply online through the government's visa website, and Tech Nation usually decides within 5 to 8 weeks.

• Visa:

  once endorsed, you have three months to apply. Decisions usually take about 3 weeks from outside the UK and 8 weeks from inside.

• Fees:

  £766 in total, paid as £561 for the endorsement and £205 for the visa, according to the official fee table of 8 October 2026. Winners of an eligible prestigious prize skip the endorsement and pay the full £766 at the visa stage.

• Health surcharge:

  £1,035 a year for each adult and £776 a year for each child, paid upfront for the length of the visa.

• Family:

  a partner and children under 18 can join you, each paying £766 plus the surcharge.

What the visa lets you do

This is where the route earns its reputation. You can be an employee, self-employed and a company director, all at the same time if you like, and you can change or stop a job without notifying the immigration authorities. The official rules set no minimum salary and no English language requirement for this visa. You choose how long to apply for, up to five years at a time, and you can renew as often as you need, as long as you can show you've earned money in your field while in the UK.

For people in martech, the appeal is that the permission follows your career rather than your employer. A founder can start a company, a growth lead can take a better offer and a consultant can work across clients, all on the same visa. The hard part is the evidence, and that's something you can start building today.
