Radio 786
reports that another deadly shooting has left the Belgravia community reeling, with two people killed and another injured in an attack in Voel Street on Saturday evening.
According to police, Athlone SAPS responded to reports of a shooting at around 7pm, where officers found a 65-year-old woman and an adult man with gunshot wounds.
Both victims were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. A third person, who was injured during the incident, was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Police believe the shooting may be gang-related. No arrests have been made, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.
The latest incident comes days after another deadly shooting shook the wider Athlone area.
On Tuesday morning, a 31-year-old man was shot dead inside his vehicle on Belgravia Road after reportedly dropping his child off at school.
The shooting took place outside Heatherdale Primary School as learners were returning to class following the school holidays.
The location raised concerns about the potential impact of gun violence on families and the school community, particularly during a busy period when parents and children would ordinarily be travelling to and from school.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel F.C. Van Wyk confirmed that the man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face and upper body.
Authorities believe that attack may also have been gang-related, although police have not released further details about the possible motive or circumstances leading up to the shooting.
An investigation into the murder was opened, and no arrests had been made in connection with the incident at the time of reporting.
Police have not indicated that Heatherdale Primary School or its learners were directly targeted.
The two incidents have brought renewed attention to gun violence in Belgravia and the surrounding Athlone area.
While the circumstances of the shootings remain under investigation.
The Tuesday shooting was particularly concerning because it happened outside a primary school during the morning rush, while Saturday’s incident claimed two lives and left another person injured.
Police have yet to announce arrests in either case.
