TWENTY-SEVEN (27) people have died after a commuter omnibus collided head-on with a haulage truck on the 130-km peg along the Harare-Masvingo highway on Friday night.
Reports indicate that the accident occurred about 15km near Chivhu Business Centre, at around 8pm.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic accident.
“Yes, we confirm a fatal road traffic accident which occured at the 130-km peg along the Harare-Masvingo highway, near Makumimavi Primary School, yesterday. Twenty-seven people died. We will release more details about the accident later,” Comm Nyathi said.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that the kombi was carrying members of a local apostolic sect.
It is also reported that due to the collision, the kombi caught fire and was reduced to a shell.
The deceased were reportedly ferried to Chivhu Hospital mortuary.
